CONSUMER AND COMMERCIAL LAW SECTION

Jerry Jarzombek, Chair 2019-2020

The Consumer & Commercial Law Section has had an exciting and productive year. The Section donated $10,000.00 to the Texas Access to Justice Foundation and $5,000.00 to the Texas Bar Foundation to assist low income Texans affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. These gifts were possible because of budget savings when in-person meetings and events were cancelled. Following on the work begun by Andy Sattler, the Council made improvements to the Section website, www.txconsumerlawyers.org. I encourage you to check out the website. A password protected area for Section members will be coming soon. In compliance with State Bar guidelines, the Council adopted a Section financial policy. The policy is posted in the About section of the website. The annual Advanced Consumer & Commercial Law CLE was a success with Section members able to attend in person or via webcast. The first annual Mark Kincaid memorial lecture on insurance law was given by Renee Sigman from Houston whose topic was Texas Insurance Law Update: The Good, the Bad & the Ugly. Congratulations to Raul Noriega of San Antonio who won the Richard Alderman Award for best speaker with his presentation on manufactured housing. This year’s Advanced Consumer & Commercial Law CLE is scheduled for August 27-28,2020. We have an excellent line up of speakers and topics. Currently, the CLE was scheduled to be a live presentation but due to COVID-19 will be via webcast.

Finally, the Section continues to offer members free subscriptions to:

  • its acclaimed Journal of Consumer & Commercial Law published in cooperation with the University of Houston Law Center; and
  • the Lexology newsfeed featuring articles on timely consumer and commercial law decisions.
